With operations in over 20 countries and more than 300 million users, Vodafone needed a VCM solution capable of managing up to 10,000 TV channels, integrating multiple distribution protocols (IPTV, OTT, DVB), and delivering personalized, secure video content to millions of users across web, mobile, and Smart TVs.

The Challenge

Vodafone required a flexible and robust VCM platform that could serve as the core of its interactive TV ecosystem. This included:

System Architecture

The platform was designed using a modular microservices approach, enabling Vodafone to independently deploy, upgrade, and scale subsystems such as billing, content packaging, player logic, and user profiles.

Backend

• Laravel (PHP framework): Used to manage user profiles, content metadata, subscription logic, and access policies. Laravel provided rapid development capabilities with robust ORM, middleware, and security tools.
• Java: Powered performance-critical services such as video streaming pipelines, metadata ingestion, and third-party system integrations (DRM, billing, etc.).
• REST APIs exposed to client applications (web, mobile, Smart TV) and third-party services (EPG, analytics, CRM).

Frontend & Mobile

• JavaScript + HTML5: Enabled a seamless, responsive web interface with embedded video players, subscription management, and personalized content feeds.
• Swift (iOS) and Java (Android): Native mobile apps with offline viewing, secure playback, and in-app purchases.
• UI frameworks allowed regional Vodafone teams to skin the applications with their own branding using modular CSS theming, icon packages, and template layouts.

Security & DRM

• Integrated with professional DRM/CAS systems, enabling content protection and rights enforcement through:
  • Device-level token authorization
  • Session validation
  • Geo/IP-based restrictions
• Content access was controlled via tokenized conditional access, ensuring only authorized users and devices could consume premium content.

The VCM system supports playback and interactivity across:
